The following is an excerpt from a transcript. It is taken from an interview
recorded at a secured location. Certain details have been deliberately omitted.
AUTHOR: Please state your name.
FISK: My name Preston Duquesne Fisk.
AUTHOR: Does the name Jason Cutter mean anything to you?
FISK: Doesn’t ring a bell. Should it?
AUTHOR: No reason. I was just curious.
FISK: How is the research for your book going? Are you getting everything you need?
AUTHOR: I’m not wild about being forced to work under these conditions, but I am getting most of what I need.
What’s your earliest recollection?
FISK: I don’t understand.
AUTHOR: What’s your earliest memory?
FISK: Why does that matter?
AUTHOR: Please answer the question. What’s your ealrierst memory?
FISK: I dunno. Christmas with my parents. I was an only child.
AUTHOR: What year?
FISK: I really don’t see what this has to do with your project.
AUTHOR: Fair enough. Tell me about your life before you got involved in this conspiracy.
FISK: I try not to think about it.
AUTHOR: I need some background. A little something for character development. Help me understand who you were before all of this happened.
FISK: I was a spoiled brat. Private schools and distant parents. Is that what you’re looking for ? A little something to trash me with?
AUTHOR: You seem pretty well grounded today. What changed?
FISK: I went to an ivy league college and promptly got my ass handed to me on a silver plate. Too much partying.
Not enough study skills. My parents cut me off, and I got a job. I cleaned up my act and graduated in the middle of my class.
Nothing quite like a boot to the head to make you straighten up and fly right.
AUTHOR: Your transcript says you have an MBA in business, and an M.A. in political science. How did you meet the people that you now work with?
FISK: Yeah. About that. I’m not sure that’s necessary for your project. I don’t want you to get wrapped up in my story.
The people around me are the ones you should be focusing on.
AUTHOR: With all due respect, I think you ARE the story. I’m not trying to flatter you. I’m just stating the honest truth, as I see it.
I need to know as much about you as I can.
FISK: I’ll speak to Jasmine. She can give you my biography.
AUTHOR: Not good enough. Look, maybe we got off on the wrong foot. I’d like to meet with you again.
I’ll try to come up with a more compatible line of questioning.
FISK: Look, Justin. I don’t know what they told, but you’re not here to write an exact history.
I don’t need to have every nitty-gritty detail about me preserved for the ages. Your job is to tell the story.
Boil it down to the basics, and let the people who read this book make up their own minds.
AUTHOR: I’ve already seen your biography, and I’m just trying to fill in the gaps.
FISK: My schedule is pretty full. I’m going from here to the airport. I’m out of the country for the next two weeks.
Going to Spain. You’ll be fully briefed on my trip. We can talk after I get back.
AUTHOR: Please, don’t brush me off. I know how hard it is to get on your schedule.
FISK: Let me give you one piece of advice before I go. It’ll take you at least a year to go through all the audio, video,
and celluloid film that we’ve got stored in this very secure location. Don’t grill us. We’re not holding out on you.
Read, listen, and see for yourself. Be an observer. Don’t try to interpret us, or what we do. Just tell the damned story.
AUTHOR: What’s going on in Spain?
FISK: Nothing that you need to be concerned about.
AUTHOR: One last thing. I can’t seem to arrange a meeting with the President.
FISK: That’s one piece of the puzzle you won’t be getting from us. AS far as the publishing world is concerned,
every word you write about this conspiracy is fiction, with a capitol F. Write whatever you want about Madeline Hill.
I’m sure you’ll do a good job.
